Liquid or gaseous argon may be used with the Liberty Serien 11 System. The use of liquid argon is recommended, since it is purer, more convenient and cheaper per unit volume.

AGM-2 Module

At wavelengths below 189 nm, oxygen in the optical system of the Liberty ICP-AES beginn to absorb the energy emitted from the plasma. To perform measurements below 189 nm requires the purging of the optical system with an inert gas. This removes any oxygen present, allowing the far UV wavelengths to be used.

The Auxiliary Gas Module (AGM-2) is an accessory designed to extend the wavelength range of the Liberty 100 ICP-AES spectrometer. lt does this by purging both the monochromator and the pre-optics snout assembly with nitrogen. This extends the wavelength range down to 175 nm, allowing the Liberty 100 to be used for the determination of important additional elements, such as sulfur.

The Liberty 100, fitted with the AGM-2 accessory is the best alternative if the far UV region is used infrequently. The Liberty 200 vacuum monochromator provides the best detection limits and stability in the far UV if that region is often used.

SPS-5 Autosampler

The SPS-5 Autosampler is designed for use with several of Varian's Instruments:

q          Liberty ICP-AES spectrometers

q          Cary UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometers

q          SpectrAA spectrometers

This manual describes how to unpack and install the sampler. For details on the software Interface to the sampler you should consult the relevant Instrument manual.

The SPS-5 can fit up to 500 samples, with the extension platform fitted and five type 10 racks. Several different rack types are available. Three racks may be fitted on the standard unit. The extension platform must be fitted to allow five racks to be used.

The SPS-5 features the automatic Varian Magnetic Rack Recognition system. This means that the SPS-5 knows which rack type is in each rack position. This is done with a magnetic identification system.

A cover is available for use with corrosive or dangerous samples.

Note Moving the SPS-5 arm or probe arm of the SPS-5 during Operation will sause a loss of alignment. To realign, reset the SPS-5 as described in section 3.4.
