Measurement of TC (total carbon)

Pure air carrier gas is flow-regulated to 150mL/min. and allowed to flow through the TC combustion tube which is packed wich catalyst and kept at 680°C. When the sample entern the TC combustion tube, the TC (total carbon) in the sample is oxidized into carbon dioxide. The carrier gas contain­ing the combustion products from the TC combustion tube flows through the IC reaction vessel, dehumidifier, halogen scrubber, and finally reaches the sarnple cell of the nondisper­sive infrared (NDIR) detector, which measures the carbon diox‑

ide content. The Output signal (analog) c :ff , the NDIR detector is

displayed as peaks. The peak areas are measured and proces­sed by the data processing unit.

Since the peak areas are proportional to the total carbon concentrations, the total carbon in a sample can be easily determined from the calibration curve prepared using Standard solutions of known carbon content.

Total carbon is the sum of the TOC (total organic carbon) and the IC (inorganic carbon)

 

Measurement of IC (inorganic carbon)

The sample is injected into the IC reaction vessel which has carrier gas bubbling through the IC reaction solution. Only the inorganic carbon in the sample is converted into carbon doxide, which is then detected by the NDIR detector.

The concentration of inorganic carbon is the sum of carbon­ate and hydrogen carbonate.

 

Measurement of TOC (total organic carbon)

The TOC concentration is obtained by subtracting the IC concentration from the TC concentration.

 

Measurement of NPOC (non-purgeable organic carbon)

An acidified sample is sparged with.high purity air to remove the IC; then the TOC content is measured directly. The result is generally called TOC, out fiere it is specifically caIed NPOC (non-purgeable organic carbon) to distinguish it from the TOC value obtained from the differente between TC and IC. The Spargrog process will remove both IC and those organic carbon cornpounds that are volatile at ambient temperatures.
