•            Four-channel inline vacuum degasser (one channel reserved for sample management purge solvent)

•            Integral plunger seal-wash system

•            LCD display

•            Keyboard

•            Floppy dick drive (using 3.5-inch floppy disks)

•            Column heater (optional)

•            Sample heater/cooler (optional)

•            Column selection valve (optional)

•            Bar code reader (optional)

When the 2790 Separations Module with the optional sample heater/cooler is installed with the 2790 column heater, it is known as the 2790XE. Refer to Section B.3, 2790 Module Options, for Information about the 2790 Separations Module options.

Operating Modes

The 2790 Separations Module can operate as a stand-alone HPLC system controller, as an HPLC system controlled by Millennium@ 32 software, or as a component of an HPLC or LC/MS system controlled by MassLynx" software.

•            As a stand-alone HPLC system controller, the 2790 managen a variety of sample plates while controlling one or morc detectors. Optionally, the 2790 can also control a 3-column selection, 6-column selection, or column regeneration valve.

•            As an HPLC system controlled by Millennium32 software (version 3.2 or higher), the 2790performs sample and solvent management, column selection, and system equilibration.

•            As a component of an LC/MS system controlled by MassLynx (version 3.3 or higher), the 2790 performs sample and solvent management, column selection, and system equilibration.

An LC/MS system that includes the 2790, the Waters ZMD mass spectrometer, and MassLynx software is designated a Waters Alliance® HT LC/MS System (Figure 1-2).

System Configurations

The 2790 Separations Module supports IEEE-488 and I/0 connections within a variety of HPLC and LC/MS system configurations.

The 2790 Separations Module can be configured in a stand-alone mode to provide control of up to three UV or RI detector channels as follows:

•            Up to two UV detector channels (a Waters 2487 Dual Detector, single or dual-channel, and/or a Waters 486 Tunable Absorbance Detector)

•            One RI detector channel (Waters 2410 or 410 Differential Refractometer).

The 2790 Separations Module can be configured under Millennium32 software. You use a Millennium32 Chromatography Manager workstation to create methods, which control the Separations Module and other HPLC system components. All detectors that are supported by Millennium32 software can be used wich the 2790 Separations Module. Data from the detectors are sent over the IEEE-488 Interface bus to the Millennium32 software for processing.

In an Alliance HT LC/MS system controlled by MassLynx software, MassLynx can control up to two of the following (one of each):

•            Waters ZMD detector

•            Waters 2487 detector

With the 2790 Separations Module, you can make parameters such as pressure limits or syringe

draw rates pari of a Separation method. You can program the values of these parameters to change from method to method without having to Set up the Instrument before each run.

Spill Protection

All fluid-handling areas of the 2790 haue spill protection; spilled solvent is routed to waste line connectors below the front panel. A drip tray is provided for the top cover if you place a detector an top of the 2790. A solvent bottle tray provides storage for up to four 1 -L solvent reservoirs.

Methods Storage and Retrieval

You can Store up to 60 methods (methods include separation methods and sample sets) in the 2790. When the number of stored methods approaches the maximum (60), the delay when you create and saue methods increases to more than 30 seconds. When 60 methods haue been stored, a warning message appears indicating that storage capacity has been reached.

The 2790 can export and import separation methods and sample sets from Standard PC-formatted, 3.5-inch floppy disks using the built-in floppy disk drive.

The 2790 also Supports import of sample sets created and exported using a PC-based Spreadsheet application or text editor in ASCII Format.

PL-ELS 1000

Introduction

The PL-ELS 1000 evaporative light scattering detector or mass detector is a unique and highly sensitive detector for non-volatile solutes in a volatile liquid stream. lt is mainly used as a concentration detector in Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and other forms of Liquid Chromatography. The solvent stream containing the solute material is nebulized and carried by a gas flow through an evaporating chamber. The solvent is volatilised, leaving a miss of solute particles that scatter light to a photosensitive device. The Signal is amplified and a voltage output results. The output is directly related to the "mass" of the solute particles passing through the light, hence the narre "Mass Detector".

The PL-ELS 1000 may be used alone, or as one of several detectors in a GPC or Liquid Chromatography System. As the solvent or eluent is evaporated in the course of the analysis, the PL-ELS 1000 must be the last in series if used in conjunction wich other detectors. If the PLELS 1000 is being used as the last detector in a series, care must be taken not to exceed the recommended back-pressure in detector cells in other units.
