The Spectra-Physics Model J40-BL6-106Q system comprises the Model BL6- 106Q solid-state laser head and the Model J40 air-cooled power supply.

The Vanadate-based laser head is optimized for extreme short pulse dura-tion and high peak power performance with excellent mode quality and sta-bility at high repetition rates.
Vanadate (Nd:YVO 4 ) is a popular solid-state laser host because of its high gain and because it can provide high-power laser emission at high pulse repetition rates. Vanadate, like all other solid-state active media, exhibits thermal lensing caused by the temperature gradient inside the crystalline material. This temperature gradient creates an optical index gradient that acts as a lens.
The effective focal length of this thermal lens is determined, in part, by the amount of heat generated in the crystal by the pump energy. The more pump energy applied to the crystal, the stronger the thermal lens and the shorter the effective focal length.
The Model BL6-106Q periodic resonator, a compact linear cavity, allows the crystal to be end-pumped to ensure stable, high-power, single spatial mode output and to alleviate any mode quality issues. The round pump beam from a FCbar diode laser module results in a radial temperature gradient with minimal aberrations. The resonator optics are also carefully designed to mode match this pump region.
The Model J40-BL6-106Q system delivers more than 5 W of Q-switched power in the near infrared at 1064 nm in a near diffraction-limited beam (M 2 < 1.2). The repetition rate is adjustable from 1 Hz to 150 kHz. The tables at the end of Chapter 3 contain full system specifications.

The Model BL6-106Q Laser Head
The Model BL6-106Q laser head was specifically designed for applications that require a highly efficient, Q-switched, round laser beam with a short pulse width and good mode in a cost effective package. It features a rugged design with a sealed laser head for simple, hands-off operation. Driving the system is a single, patented, industry leading, high-power FCbar diode laser module that provides infrared pump power to end-pump the Vanadate crystal in the laser head.
