Biostat® DL
In-situ sterilizable research-/pilot-scale fermentor
The Biostat® DL is a compact research-/pilot-scale fermentor system with in-situ sterilizable
culture vessels up to 50l working volume.
As compact version of the proven Biostat® D-family, the Open frame design Biostat® DL combines the well established Biostat® D-fermentor hardware with a powerful control unit of the micro DCU product line.
The modular design of the Biostat® DL consists of the supply unit, the culture vessel with agitator and the control system. To complete the system, pH-, pO 2 -, temperature- and antifoam sensors as well as three peristaltic addition pumps and three storage bottles for acid, alkali and anti-foam are also included.
The open frame design of the supply unit provides ready access and ease of maintenance for all process piping and actuators.
The stainless steel frame with trays for the micro DCU-400 and for the storage bottles is a part of the supply unit as well.
The jacketed, stainless steel culture vessels, with spiral baffles for efficient and homogenous heat transfer, are available with 20l, 30l and 50l working volumes in a height to diameter ratio of 3: 1. This is in line with the well proven scale-up strategy.
The high performance AC motor in combination with the 3 Rushton turbines provides an efficient mixing and dispersion of gas bubbles at high aeration rates.
The Biostat® DL is capable of operating in both batch and fed-batch modes.
In-situ sterilizable research-/pilot-scale fermentor
Multiple cascade controller for pO 2
External variable speed pump connection
Integrated RS 422 host interface
Pressure measurement and control (option)
Massflow controller (option)
The micro DCU-400 is a powerful digital measurement and control system with connectors for the complete process I/O.
The control hardware is based on our proven DFC (Digital Fermenter Control) circuit board. This microprocessor system is especially designed for bioprocess automation. The DFC contains the measurement amplifiers and actuator signal outputs. This approach leads to high system reliability.
Software functionality includes process measurements, calibration routines and a standard set of control loops. An automatic sterilization sequence for the culture vessel, inclusive of the air inlet and exhaust filters, is also standard.
The multiloop cascade controller for dissolved oxygen, the substrate controller with set point control profile, and on-line pH recalibration capabilities are additional features of the software.
Furthermore, all measurement and control functions for optional system extensions are pre configured, as well.
The software is developed under a quality control system which follows the GAMP (Good Automated Manufacturing Practice) guidelines. This helps guarantee consistency throughout the softwares lifecycle.
The ergonomically designed user interface, combined with a proven, function-oriented menu structure, ensures user-friendly operation with minimal training.
Easy to learn operation is important in both academic and industrial operating environments.
The proven fermentor hardware combined with the powerful software functionality is a key feature of the unit. Additional features, like the RS 422 serial interface port computer connection and system extensions such as airflow controller, exhaust cooler and pressure measurement and control all contribute to a formidable total package.
