The BRAN+LUEBBE InfraAlyzer 500 is a sophisticated scanning instrument that enables rapid and non-destructive analysis of a wide variety of solids and liquids using near infrared light. Analysis requires little or no sample preparation. Liquid analysis can be achieved with the use of a Liquid Drawer option for sample presentation. The EDAPT-1 Probe option enables external analysis of solid samples, via application of a detection probe to the sample, and liquid or paste samples via immersion of the probe into the sample. Please refer to Section 7, ''Options'" of this manual for further Information regarding any options.
Since Near Infrared (NIR) Reflectance Technology gained commercial acceptance as a result of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to analyze grain products for such constituents as protein, fat and moisture, this technology has been advanced to permit compositional analysis of a variety of products with accuracies comparable to the best analytical methods. The InfraAlyzer 500 uses this technology to measure the relative intensity of near infrared light at different wavelengths, absorbed at the surface of the sample and reflected to detectors to measure and calculate sample constituent composition. The InfraAlyzer 500 is particularly suited to the development of calibrations for products and their constituents because it is a scanning instrument. After suitable calibration, different constituents of a selected product can be analyzed simultaneously.
The results for all of the constituents in the selected product are sequentially shown at a predetermined rate in a five-digit LED display an the Control and Display Panel of the instrument.
In its standard configuration, the InfraAlyzer 500 scans wavelengths between 1100 and 2500 nanometers (nm), providing as many as 700 data points for each sample.
The vast amount of Information available from each sample enables the InfraAlyzer 500 to be utilized in significant rotes in the analytical laboratory, ie, as a research Instrument to develop calibrations for a wide variety of products. To realize this potential, the InfraAlyzer 500 raust be interfaced with a suitably configured Computer with BRAN + LUEBBE "InfraAlyzer Data Analysis Software" (IDAS) or Sesame installed, and a printer. Please refer to the "User's Reference Manual for IDAS Software," Technical Publication No. DSM-0006 or the "User's Reference Manual for Sesame", Technical Publication No. DSM + P960-01 for instructions an the use of the Instrument in this mode.
calibrations produced by the IDAS or Sesame Program from InfraAlyzer 500 scanned data are transferrable to other BRAN + LUEBBE InfraAlyzer Instruments for their use in the analysis of unknown Samples.
The IDAS Program performs the following main functions-.
Data Collection : Data is collected for the purpose of reporting constituent values using an existing calibration, or to provide data to create calibration equations.
Data Manipulation: Sample data collected in a Data Collection File can be plotted, edited, transformed using mathematical Operators, or it can be transformed to report continuous data at discrete wavelengths.
Data Analysis: Enables a choice of techniques to determine the best set of wavelengths to be used by the program for calculating calibration equations. These techniques use linear regression to find the best set.
Basic Principles of NIRS
Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is a technique for analysing the chemical composition of unknown Samples. lt uses light in the 1100-2500 nanometer (nm) range and measures the absorption (reflection) from the sample, to make the predictions.
When light strikes a sample of opaque material, some of the light is absorbed and the rest is reflected. The percentage of light absorbed varies with wavelength, according to the chemical and physical structure of the sample. The amount of light absorbed may be determined by comparing the intensity of the original light with that of the reflected light.
Reflection is either specular or diffuse. In specular reflection the angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence. An example of specular reflection is light reflected by a mirror. Diffuse reflection, however, scatters the light at all angles.
If the light penetrates into a sample surface a small distance (t) with a potential for transferring energy to vibrating chemical bonds a portion of the light is absorbed and the rest will be reflected back. The energy transfer may occur when the frequency of incident light is the same as the frequency of vibration (either fundamental or overtone) of a chemical bond. In spectroscopy the term reflectance is offen used to describe the normalized reflection against a reference.
A series of representative samples (reference set) is scanned to determine a correlation between the changing levels of a constituent and the absorption of near infrared radiation at one or more wavelengths. By using a correlation transform and other statistical tools, an equation can be developed to reliably determine the quantity of a constituent in "unknown" samples.
The InfraAlyzer 500 is designed to eliminate specular light when reading the sample and to measure only the diffuse light which interacted with the components of the sample. An Instrument reference reading is also taken automatically. This reading is of the stable internal surface of the integrating sphere and is made in rapid sequence with the sample readings, under the same conditions. The relationship between the two readings is the reflectance reading which provides the basis for calculating the percent constituent in the sample.
DESCRIPTION
The BRAN + LUEBBE InfraAlyzer 500 uses Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict the chemical composition of unknown samples. lt uses light in the 1100-2500 nanometer (nm) range to make the predictions. When used wich InfraAlyzer Data Analysis Software (IDAS) or Sesame and the appropriate Computer the Instrument data can be used to develop multi-parameter analysis calibrations which may be transferred to discrete filter InfraAlyzer Instruments.
