Introduction

The MCN-6000 is a sample introduction system designed primarily for ICP mass spectrometry. The MCN-6000 incorporates the microconcentric nebulizer which yields low sample flow rates and high sensitivity.

Detection limits are improved with the MCN-6000 by enhancing analyte transport efficiency and reducing solvent loading to the plasma. Compared to pneumatic nebulization, detection of sample analytes is usually improved by an order of magnitude with the MCN-6000. Typically, injected water vapor causes oxide and hydride polyatomic ion interferences in ICP-MS; organic solvent vapor loading causes carbide polyatomic ion interferences in ICP-MS as well as plasma instability and carbon deposition on sampling cones. Using the MCN-6000 as the sample introduction system greatly reduces these interferences.

In operation, liquid sample is sprayed into the spray chamber using a microconcentric nebulizer operating at a flow rate of approximately 60µl per minute. The spray chamber is heated to help eliminate water droplets from forming inside the spray chamber. The nebulizer gas flow transports the wet aerosol through the membrane desolvator which preserves the high sample transport efficiency and greatly reduces solvent loading into the ICP, thus alleviating solvent interferences. Solvent vapor is removed through a micro-porous PTFE tubular membrane while analyte continues through the tube and to the plasma. An argon flow (sweep gas) removes the solvent vapor from the exterior of the membrane.
