The Thunderdome is a unique single reflection HATR that utilizes a spherical ATR crystal as the sampling surface. This unique spherical sampling surface in combination with the Pressure Tower provides "point-to-point" contact between the sample and crystal when analyz­ing solid samples. This point-to-point contact is ideal for analyzing hard, rigid, unyielding and difficult to analyze samples. The new fail­safe pressure device eliminates the risk of damage to the crystal surface, and reduces the need for tedious sample positioning.

The New Liquid Holder extends the usefulness of the Thunderdome. The Liquid Holder can be attached easily, requiring no modifications to the base unit. The "swimming pool" design is optimized for small volumes and ease of cleaning.

The spherical configuration of the ATR produces a nominal 2X reduction in the beam diameter. Concentrating the energy to a smaller Spot size provides the ability to analyze smaller samples as compared to other single reflection ATR accessories. Another impor­tant benefit of the smafler samphng area is the ability to exert more pressure an the sample, ensuring Optimum sample to crystal contact. The pressure device tip is 2 mm, essentially defining the practical sampling size. This small contact size requirement permits the Thunderdome to very effectively analyze Small samples such as polymer beads, single filaments and paint chips.

The Thunderdome utilizes an extremely rugged germanium ATR crystal which has a spectral range of 4000-675 cm-1. compared to other ATR accessories with flat sampling surfaces, the spectral quality obtained with the Thunderdome is greatly enhanced. This enhance­ment is due to the point-to-point contact between crystal and the Pressure Tower. The crystal material and shape makes Thunderdome a good general-purpose IR accessory. In addition to routine hquids and solids, the Thunderdome will facifitate the analysis of difficult samples. Single polymer beads, hard polymers and glass Substrates can be easily measured. The germanium crystal gives a more shaflow depth of penetration which is ideal for highly absorbing carbon filled samples. The Thunderdome also eliminates the need to press peHets -which is not only a time-consuming process, but also results in altered sample morphology and requires an expensive press and film maker. The Thunderdome is completely purgeable, alignment free, and base­plate mounted for stabifity, making it useful for both qualitative and quantitative analyses.
