The following illustrations and descriptions are referring to the instrument model and are drawn from brochures. They are not representing the delivery volume. The exact delivery content you will find only in the offering text.
The WatersTM Model 484 Tunable Absorbance Detector (referred to as the Waters 484) is a single-channel tunable ultraviolet/visible (UVNIS) detector designed for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) applications.
The Waters 484 monitors the eluent stream from a chromatographic column and detects the presence of sample molecules through optical absorbance at a wide range of specific wavelengths in the ultraviolet and visible spectrum. lt has a usable wavelength spectrum of 190-600 nanometers (nm) although its primary use is in the ultraviolet wavelength range between 190 and 380 nanometers. The maximum sensitivity of the instrument is .001 absorbance units full scale (AUFS).
The Waters 484 can operate as a "stand-alone" unit (with a chart recorder) or with other Waters System modules, such as the Waters 745 integrator.
The Waters 484 offers the following features:
A modular design that allows for easy servicing
Extensive self-calibration to ensure wavelength accuracy and diagnostic routines to verify that the Waters 484 is functioning correctly
Battery backup to retain parameter settings when the detector is powered down or in the event of power interruptions
A deuterium arc lamp
The patented Taper-Cell ® flow cell design which reduces refractive index interference from the absorbance signal
The main components of the Waters 484 include the mechanical parts (such as the front and rear panels and the outer top cover), optics, electronics, and the software.
The optics consist of the optical source and other necessary components that allow the detector to perform absorbance detection.
The electronics of the Waters 484 are digital-based and include hardware such as a front panel keyboard, printed circuit boards and their interconnections. The electronics also include software to control operations such as sensitivity settings, wavelength selection and calibration, and the diagnostics of the detector.
The Waters 484 is simple to operate. By pressing appropriate keys on the keyboard of the front panel, you access parameters (such as absorbance, sample energy, reference energy, or wavelength) and enter values for specific parameters.
The Waters 484 mechanical components include the front and rear panels and the outer top cover.
The right siele of the front panel consists of the keyboard, the displays and indicators, and the ON/OFF rocker switch.
The left side of the front panel includes the access panel which holds the fluid connections. The flowcell and drip tray are located below the access panel.
All electrical connections and the fuse and AC receptacle are located an the rear panel. The rear panel may include the optional IEEE-488 interface board.
Be sure you have properly installed the Waters 484 before operating. Refer to Section 2.7, Installation Summary.
For normal use, be sure to allow the Waters 484 to run for thirty minutes before operating.
