ARL QUANTODESK

The Smallest, Flexible CCD Based Metals Analyzer

Your need...

You need the flexibility of a full-size multi-matrix metals analyzer in a limited space and at an affordable price....

Our solution...

The ARL QUANTODESK is a very compact desktop spectrometer for metals analysis based on CCD (Charge Coupled Device) technology. A single CCD replaces the photomultiplier detectors used in traditional spark spectrometers and gives the instrument immense flexibility. The ARL QuantoDesk has the potential to analyze all elements without any optical compromise.

CCD technology appeared ten years ago in spectroscopy, permitting lower costs and smaller desktop instruments. In its broadest definition, a charge coupled device (CCD) image sensor is an analogue integrated circuit converting an optical image into an electronic output. As with many semiconductor components, the evolution of CCDs from a laboratory concept has been extremely rapid, boosted by their potential for a wide range of applications in both consumer products and sophisticated professional equipment. Today, Thermo Electron uses this advanced technology in spectrometers such as the ARL QUANTODESK.

The ARL QUANTODESK provides the capability to perform a rapid check close to the furnace where its performance meets the analytical needs of quality control departments. Its simple architecture allows for high accuracy, stability and reliability, making it the solution for numerous industrial applications in rugged environments.

Proven applications

The ARL QUANTODESK is ideal for the following industries:

  • Small and medium size foundries
  • Larger foundries which need to perform a quick check near the furnace
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Quality control departments
  • Warehouses

The ARL QUANTODESK can be calibrated for all applications without any optical compromise. A wide range of standard factory calibrations or future updates are available covering all the common alloy ranges and grades.

The customer can add new calibrations at any time or extend existing calibrations without any additional need for hardware changes.

The ARL QUANTODESK is currently being used in many application areas, including the following:

  • Ferrous alloys
    • Low alloy steel
    • Cast iron
    • Stainless steel
    • Manganese steel
    • Stainless iron
  • Aluminum alloys
    • Global calibration
    • Low alloy aluminum
  • Copper alloys
    • Brass
    • Bronze
  • Zinc alloys

Key features

  • Simple and easy to use, permits lowest cost sample analysis
  • Up and running within a few hours of delivery
  • Minimal argon consumption to flush the stand and the spectrometer in comparison to its peers
    • Additional “Quick purge” kit to save argon costs. Permits the operation of the ARL QUANTODESK in less than 30 minutes after the instrument has been switched off overnight or for several days
    • No vacuum pumps and small exhaust filter, minimize maintenance costs
  • Full wavelength coverage, provides the ability to identify unknown elements and reduces the need for external analytical services

  • Specific customer language

The following features are available on the analytical module of WinDPI :

  • Simple standardization / Type standardization
  • Customization of the grades library
  • Check of results against material grade specifications
  • Results storage and retrieval

Calibration module: MVR facilities

The same Multi-Variable Regression (MVR) tool used in the high-end optical emission instruments is available. This feature permits:

  • Unlimited calibrations
    • Either standard or customer specific
    • Each calibration can cover an unlimited number of elements or analytical channels in chosen matrices
  • On-site adjustments such as
    • Extensions
    • New lines
    • New bases
    • Curve corrections

Profile module: qualitative analysis

This module makes the entire image stored by the CCD available and permits:

  • Identification of unknown elements
  • Comparison of different materials

Flat Held optical system

  • Simple configuration without mirrors or intermediate optics (one primary slit, one grating, no secondary slit)
  • Simple detection system (single CCD)
  • The simplicity of this system facilitates manufacturing of very stable and reliable instruments
