Meßprinzip
Die Karl-Fischer-Titration ist eine genaue, bekannte Methode zur Wasserbestimmung, die die quantitative Reaktion von Jod mit Wasser ausnutzt. Sie gilt wegen ihrer Empfindlichkeit und Selektivität als Referenzmethode.
In der coulometrischen Karl-Fischer-Titration wird die Probe in die methanolische Lösung einer stickstoffhaltigen Base eingeleitet, die als Hauptkomponenten Jodid und Schwefeldioxid enthält. Das zur Reaktion erforderlicheJod wird an derAnode elektrolytisch hergestellt und reagiert mit dem Wasser in der Probe gemäß Formel 1.
Nach dem Faraday'schen Gesetz ist die zur Herstellung des Jods benötigte Elektrizitätsmenge direkt proportional zum Wassergehalt der Probe. Ein Mol des nach Formel 2 gebildeten Jods reagiert quantitativ mit einem Mol Wasser.

1 mg Wasser entspricht dabei 10,71 Coulomb. Da es sich um eine absolute Methode handelt, entfällt die bei der normalen Karl-Fischer-Titration notwendige, zeitaufwendige Bestimmung des Titers.
