The Leica RM2255 is a motorized rotary microtome. The sample feed system with backlash-free, maintenance-free cross-roller guides and the stepper motor-driven coarse feed are housed in a dustproof plastic casing. The instrument is equipped with a safety handwheel with a centerable grip and a mechanical handwheel lock. All controls and LEDs are centralized in a separate control panel. The controls are logically grouped into functional categories and are easily identifiable. Sample tracking can be deactivated. In manual mode, the tracking value can be adjusted. In motorized mode, the tracking value varies with the set cutting speed. An LED illuminates when the sample is in tracking mode. The electric coarse feed operates at two speeds. In cutting mode, the coarse feed buttons have a STEP function. Three motorized cutting modes (CONT, SINGLE, and STEP) and one manual cutting mode, the rocker mode (ROCK), are available. In rocker mode, a short back-and-forth movement of the handwheel is sufficient to make a cut. Cutting height adjustment range: 0.50 – 100 µm. Adjustable values: from 0.50 µm to 5.0 µm in 0.5 µm increments, from 5.0 to 20.0 µm in 1.0 µm increments, from 20.0 to 60.0 µm in 5.0 µm increments, and from 60.0 to 100.0 µm in 10.0 µm increments. Trimming height adjustment range: 1 – 600 µm. Adjustable settings: 1.0 to 10.0 µm in 1.0 µm increments, 10.0 to 20.0 µm in 2.0 µm increments, 20.0 to 50.0 µm in 5.0 µm increments, 50.0 to 100.0 µm in 10.0 µm increments, and 100.0 to 600.0 µm in 50.0 µm increments. Sample feed: 28 mm ±1 mm, driven by a stepper motor. Vertical stroke: 70 mm. Maximum cutting area without retraction: 65 mm² without sample orientation. Maximum cutting area with retraction: 60 mm². Sample retraction in manual cutting mode: 5–100 µm in 5 µm increments; can be deactivated. Sample retraction in motorized cutting mode: varies with cutting speed; can be deactivated.
