The cryomill SPEX 6775 Freezer / Mill ® , like the other three models SPEX 6875 / 6875A Freezer / Mill ® [Link] and SPEX 6875D Freezer / Mill ® [Link], copes with the most difficult tasks when grinding samples and is used everywhere where samples can no longer be ground at room temperature or where the samples have to be ground very gently, as otherwise volatile components, for example, would escape. Typical areas of application are therefore primarily the grinding of tough, solid plastics, leather or fibers, but also the grinding of food samples, vegetable, animal or human tissue samples as well as DNA / RNA extraction.
The grinding principle is as ingenious as it is simple - the grinding container, which is equipped with the sample and a magnetizable grinding tool (rod shape) and also closed with magnetizable end caps, is inserted into a holder in the mill, which is enclosed by two magnetic coils. During the entire grinding procedure, the entire ensemble is immersed in a bath of a few liters of liquid nitrogen, which is located in the lower, very well insulated part of the mill. This ensures the cooling and embrittlement of a sample previously introduced at room temperature as well as permanent cooling of the ground material during the grinding process. Milling is carried out continuously at a constantly low temperature (-196 ° C), whereby the sample itself does not come into direct contact with the liquid nitrogen and is therefore carried out without contamination.
A complete milling program is made up of several sections and cycles, all milling parameters (pre-cooling time, milling duration per cycle, holding time, number of milling cycles, milling speed) are simply entered via an LCD touchscreen and can be stored as automated milling programs that can be called up and run when the the respective program. This allows short set-up times and reproducible grinding results.
During the actual grinding, only the grinding tool inside the grinding container is moved back and forth in a magnetic field, thus comminuting the sample material at both ends of the container. There is no mechanical stress on the mill and therefore hardly any wear. A chamber is located above the actual grinding container holder, in which up to two ready-prepared grinding containers can be stored and thus pre-cooled. Opening the lid of the mill while grinding is in progress immediately switches off the mill via appropriate safety devices. The mill is also switched off for safety reasons if the internal level of the liquid nitrogen has fallen too low.
The cryogenic mill SPEX 6775 Freezer / Mill ® is manually filled with liquid nitrogen, has a grinding chamber and holds all available small grinding vessels with a capacity of 0.1 to 5 g or three micro-grinding vessels of the micro-grinding set with a capacity of 3 x 0, 1 to 0.5 g. The user can choose from a large number of different grinding containers in terms of material and volume, depending on the amount of sample or the requirements for the subsequent analysis.
