Nalgene Acrylic Beta Radiation Shields

Radiation Shielding

This new family of acrylic products is specifically designed to provide maximum shielding during procedures which require the handling of commonly used beta - -emitting isotopes, such as 32 P. 3 H. 14 C and 35 S, on the laboratory benchtop.

Nalgene Acrylic Radiation Shields are made of durable, transparent acrylic which has been proven in laboratory testing to stop beta-radiation. Acrylic cannot shield against secondary x-rays (Bremsstrahlung) or gamma radiation.

For standards on exposure to radioactive isotopes, refer to United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Rules and Regulations. Title 10. Chapter 1. Part 20.

Testing

Testing was performed using a 100 mCi point source of 32 P in

water. The source, contained in a 2mm (wall thickness) polyethylene vial, was placed behind the test shield and the exposure rate measured using an Eberline E-120 with Filter in place. Less than 0.1% of beta- radiation penetrated a 1/4-inch shield and none penetrated a 3/8-inch shield. Additional shielding is provided by any associated plastic containers, such as Nalgene polyethylene bottles.

The new family of Nalgene Acrylic Radiation Shields includes the following products:

Benchtop Beta Shield. Catalog No. 6700

Transparent. free standing. with an angled top. Contents of tubes located behind the shield are easily visible from the top while the shield protects the lab worker. The 12-inch Jeep Base provides a large flat work surface and reduces risk of “hot spots" on the lab bench. Shield is stable on the benchtop even if bumped. Made of 3/8-inch thick acrylic.

Benchtop Beta Waste Container. Catalog No. 6710

Cylindrical container shields lab Personnel from liquid waste material containing high energy beta - -emitting isotopes, such as ³² P.

Available in two sizes. securely holds waste bottles with 1-or 2-liter capacity. Comes with Nalgene polyethylene bottle for holding liquid waste. One liter size also accommodates 8” x 12" waste bags.

The transparent shield encases the waste bottle without obstructing access to, or manipulation of. bottle closure. Shield cap fits securely over bottle with closure in place. Extra deep machined lip on the cap prevents slipping and provides extra impact protection. Made of 3/8-inch thick acrylic.

Beta Block Test Tube Rack, Catalog No. 6720.

The unique design consists of a solid block of transparent acrylic with drilled wells. Provides maximum protection when handling high specific activity solutions. Use with Eppendorf-type microcentrifuge tubes and other small tubes. Available in two sizes to accommodate 0.5 or 1.5-mL tubes.

A minimum of 3/8 inch of acrylic shields bottom and sides of tubes to recommended fill level. Wells are generously spaced to eliminate interference of snap caps with adjacent tubes. provide easy handling. and minimize risk of contamination. Convenient 4 x 6 array is useful for sequencing reactions.

Microcentrifuge Tube Beta Back. Catalog No. 6730.

Provides good visibility while handling Iow specific activity samples. Made of 3/8-inch thick acrylic. Accommodates Eppendorf-type microcentrifuge tubes. Available in two sizes to hold 0.5- or 1.5-mL tubes.

Tube wells are generously spaced to eliminate interference of snap caps with adjacent tubes, provide easier handling and minimize risk of contamination. The 4 x 6 array is useful for nucleic acid sequencing reactions. Packs are stackable. empty or full, to save valuable storage space. The hollow rack design fully exposes the tubes in water and ice baths.

Beta Storage Box. Catalog No. 6740,

Container provides shielded storage for stock isotope solutions and radiolabelled samples (beta - -emitting isotopes only). Rectangular design saves valuable space in refrigerator or freezer. Made of 1/2-inch thick acrylic for maximum protection. Withstands prolonged use at temperatures to -70°C. Hinged top with latch.

Transparent to allow easy identification of samples without unnecessary exposure to radiation.

Includes two disposable foam inserts for secure positioning of lead pigs (small or large) or isotope bottles. Foam inserts are available separately. Replacement Part No. 71-6740-0001. Box will accommodate one or more test tube racks, such as Nalgene Beta Block Test Tube Rack, Nalgene Microcentrifuge Tube Beta Back, or Nalgene Unwire Test Tube Racks.
