The combination of silver ions and chloride ions is a quantitative reaction that results as an insoluble precipitate of silver chloride (AgCl). This reaction is carried out at a constant rate by passing a fixed direct current between a pair of silver electrodes immersed in an acid solution. The anode consumed in this reaction is a continuous coil of silver wire. As the submerged portion of the wire is consumed, fresh wire is withdrawn from the spool. Once the equivalence point of the response is reached, an increase in current is detected between a pair of separate indicator electrodes. At a preset indicator current, the device automatically stops the incremental counter and the generation of silver ions. Since the generator current is constant, the titration time is directly proportional to the number of chloride ions introduced into the sample vial.
