-             PRESENTATION

The C4-22, CR4-22 and CT4-22 centrifuges are used for the Separation of substances, of varying den­sity, by centrifugal force.

The C4-22 is a ventilated unit.

The CR4-22 is a refrigerated unit.

The CT4-22 is a thermostated unit.

In the C4-22, there is a permanent air circulation which reduces the heat level in the rotor chamber. However the temperature of the accessories can reach 10 to 12°C above the ambient temperature.

The CR4-22 refrigerated unit is equipped with a cooling unit which can maintain the rotor chamber temperature at or below the ambient temperature.

The CT4-22 thermostated model is equipped with a cooling unit and with a heating resistor which enable the control of the rotor chamber temperature below, above and at the ambient temperature.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

Unpacking

Carefully remove the unit, the accessories and the documents from the packing.

As the unit is heavy, a minimum of two people are required to handle it.

Check all items are present using the delivery note.

Remove the foam pad locking the imbalance detector according to the specific instruction street included in the unit.

Location

Place the centrifuge in a clean, non-corrosive environment to prevent damage to the centrifuge and its accessories.

Install the centrifuge to allow at least 15 mm clearance between the back of the centrifuge and any obstruction.

This clearance is necessary to get the highest cooling performance.

Lid opening

After the centrifuge has been switched ON, press the “COVER“ key: the LID is automatically unlocked and opens.

In case of a power cut-out or when the centrifuge is switched off, it is possible to open the lid, using the tool provided with the unit. Insert the rod into the access hole located on the top left side of the centrifuge, and press it until the lid opens.

CAUTION : The rotor may be rotating. Check the rotor has stopped before opening, by looking through the lid viewport.

Accessory Installation

-                           Remove the shaft nut (by turning the nut clockwise).

-                           Check the cleanless of the shaft and the rotor.

-                           Place the rotor on the shaft.

-                           Screw the shaft nut and secure lt by using the key provided in the tool kit.

-                           In the case of a swing-out rotor, grease the trunnions.

-                           Place the buckets on the trunnions after checking the weight of the buckets is identical (the        weight is engraved on the bottom of each bucket).

Balancing the load

When using fixed angle rotor, weight deviation between the tubes must not exceed +/- 5 grams.

When using a swing-out rotor, the samples are placed in plastic inserts. The load must be statically and dynamically balanced

Static balancing consists of balancing the weight of the 2 inserts which are is opposed location in the rotor (+/- 25 grams). Dynamic balancing consists of placing the tubes in each insert symetrically according to the shaft axis of the rotor.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

Drive System

The mains input voltage is converted to a variable DC voltage. This DC voltage is varied by compari-son of the speed control voltage setting with the tachometer feedback voltage. The greater the DC voltage applied to the motor, the faster the motor will spin a given rotor.

The C4-22, CR4-22 and CT4-22 centrifuges feature current limiting dependent on motor load by rotor and accessories. The shape of the rotor is primary load factor : a horizontal rotor presents a greater load than a fixed-angle rotor. The larger the diameter of a rotor, with accessories, the greater the load, and the lower the maximum R.P.M.

Relative centrifugal force (RCF), at the circumference of a rotor and bucket combination, is directly proportional to the (R.P.M.) and radius of the rotor. Therefore, a greater R.P.M. and/or a larger radius produces a greater R.C.F. and improved separation of substances.

Safety interlock system

The C4-22, CR4-22 and CT4-22 are equipped with an interlock system that prevents opening of the centrifuge lid when the rotor is spinning. The centrifuge will not operate until the lid is closed and latched in place. The lid remains latched until the rotor stops spinning. The lid access lamp indicates when the rotor has stopped and the lid access switch can be actuated to open the lid.

NOTE       If a power failure occurs, access to the samples in the centrifuge is possible. Insert and push the rod provided with the centrifuge accessory kit, into the access hole located on the top left side of the centrifuge. Perform bypass only under emergency conditions as the rotor could still be rotating.

Imbalance detection system

Both models are equipped with an imbalance system that contacts a switch when an unacceptable imbalance is present in the rotor load. As the switch is contacted, the control module shuts down voltage to the motor and the rotor comes to a stop.

The imbalance condition is displayed with the message “IMBALANCE“ and the red “ALARM“ light is on. When the motor stops, opening and correctly loading the rotor allows unit to be restarted.

NOTE The C4-22, CR4-22 and CT4-22 will tolerate 15 to 20 grams of imbalance. Carefully balance the sample load to avoid actuating the imbalance detection system.

If the locking foam pad has not been removed from the imbalance detection device, the centrifuge will consider an imbalance situation.

Refrigeration system

The CR4-22 and CT4-22 are equipped with a refrigeration system which allows the rotor chamber temperature to be controlled at a lower level than the ambient temperature. The measured value in the air in the bowl is displayed and the temperature is monitored by the microprocessor which controls the cooling unit.

The operator can use a temperature compensation procedure so that the sample temperature can be more accurately controlled.

Empirical tests by the user will enable him to know what air temperature to select compared to the normal temperature of the protocol. For example, suppose samples at 20°C need to be spun at 4°C. lt might be found that with protocol temperature (T) of 4°C the temperature difference (TD) of the air in the bowl has to be set at -3°C in order that the samples average 4°C during the run. So the air will be maintained at 1 °C.

When the centrifuges are equipped with a M4 rotor, the minimum temperature which can be conti­nuously maintained is 4°C for a maximum speed of 4500 r.p.m. at an ambient temperature below 25°C.

CT4-22 Heating system

Moreover, the CT4-22 includes a heating system which enables an accurate control of the rotor cham­ber temperature when the set value is dose to the ambient temperature or up to 60°C.

However, this threshold of 60°C is reduced to 50°C if the set speed is lower than 1000 r.p.m.
