The JASCO Model RI-2031 RID is a microcomputer-based differential refractometer that combines a high-quality optical system with advanced electronics and microcomputer control/programming capabilities. The RI-2031 is the latest addition to the new, powerful, easy-to-use and extremely compact LC-2000 Plus series of HPLC modules. The optical design of the RI-2031 is based on Snell's law of refraction, which uses a prism flow cell. Two flow cells, that is, the sample and reference cells with triangular cross-section, form a pair of liquid prisms. The light beam from the light source is directed at the prism cell through the collimator lens and passes through the prism cells of the sample and reference, where refraction occurs in accordance with the difference in refractive indices between the sample and the reference liquids. This refracted beam is then reflected back through the cell by the plane mirror located behind the flow cell, where the second refraction occurs and is focused on a photodiode. The angle of refraction, which represents the difference in refractive indices, is monitored as movement of the image on the photodiode pair, which outputs corresponding electrical signals. Advanced electronics. The difference and sum of the analog signals from the photodiode pair are converted into digital signals and sent to the CPU. Then, the CPU calculates the difference in refractive indices between the sample and the reference liquids while compensating for the intensity variation of the light source and the light absorption of the solute of the sample using the sum signal. This digital signal is displayed on the high-contrast LCD with backlight and is also sent to the analog output via a D/A converter. High stability. A highly sensitive refractive index detector requires an extremely robust optical bench that maintains perfect alignment throughout its lifespan. JASCO has achieved such optics and implemented the RI-2031. To ensure this stability, the RI-2031 was designed with careful consideration of the overall thermal balance of the system, using highly effective heat exchangers and precise temperature control on both the sample and reference cells. Time programming capability.
