Description:
The HP 5971A Mass Spectrometry Detector is a standalone capillary GC detector designed for use with the HP 5890A Gas Chromatography (GC). The basic model includes: a cast aluminum vacuum manifold, a vapor diffusion high vacuum pump, a mechanical forevacuum (rough vacuum) pump, an electron impact ion source, a hyperbolic quadrupole mass filter, an electron multiplier (detector), control electronics for the device, power supplies, a GC /MSD interface. The real-time control of the MSD is provided by the MSD electronics according to the set parameters and instructions from the data system. The data system sends operating parameters to the MSD and receives status information and data from the MSD. The data system with appropriate software is used to calibrate (adjust) the MSD, record data and process data. It also includes file management and editing utilities. Tuning programs can adjust voltages in the ion source, calibrate mass assignments, and control scanning of the mass analyzer. Data acquisition programs allow monitoring of total ion current and automatically storing the mass spectra of GC peaks as they elute (scanning mode) or alternatively monitoring the concentrations of specific ions (selected ion monitoring mode). HP 5971 MSD Specifications:. Dynamic Range: A logarithmic preamplifier offers more than six decades of dynamic range. Ionization energy: 70 eV from each filament. Mass range: 1.2 – 650 amu. Mass resolution: 0.5 +/- 0.05 amu over the entire mass range. Scan Speed: Eight user-selected scan rates with a maximum of 2000 amu/sec. at 0.1 amu mass resolution. SIM mode: In Selected Ion Monitoring (SIM) mode, the MSD monitors up to 20 individually selected masses simultaneously. Up to 200 groups of 20 masses can be selected on each run. The dwell time for each mass is user selectable from 10 ms to 32767 ms. Temperature Control: The temperature of the GC/MSD interface is user adjustable from 250°C to 320°C. The end of the GC/MSD interface conductively heats the ion source and mass filter. The vacuum manifold is not heated in any other way. Total Ion Mode: AC voltage mode, with adjustable lower mass cutter, allows the HP 5971A to function as a non-specific, highly sensitive detector. Vacuum System: Vacuum is maintained by a vapor diffusion pump supported by a two-stage, direct-drive mechanical pump. The total pumping speed of the system is around 60 liters/sec. for helium. The vacuum system can handle capillary flow rates of up to 1 ml/minute (atmosphere) helium. The HP 5890 Series II GC offers flexibility in choosing between inlets, columns and detectors through the use of liners and adapters so that any standard column can be used without compromising performance. Additional flexibility is achieved through the positioning of inlets and detectors relative to each other as well as the large internal volume of the oven. There are five inlet options and six detector options, as well as a wide range of flow and pressure control components. In gas chromatography (GC), a moving gas (mobile phase) carries the sample over a stationary phase (the solid support within a GC column). It is estimated that 10-20% of known compounds can be analyzed by GC. To be suitable for GC analysis, a compound must have sufficient volatility and thermal stability. GC is usually used when the sample can be vaporized below 400-450°C. HP 5890 Series II GC Specifications:. Heated devices. Five standard heated zones: Two detectors, two inlets, one auxiliary zone. Stored Methods: Two. Split/splitless capillary. Range up to 400 °C in 1 °C increments. Back-pressure design allows independent adjustment of split flow rate without affecting column flow. Septum purge integrated at 3 ml/min. Accommodates columns with an outside diameter of up to 1.2 mm. Multimode design includes split and splitless injection. Variable splitless purge time in 0.01 minute units. Column oven. Operating range: 4°C above room temperature to 450°C. Setpoint input: 1°C for temperatures, 0.1°C for program rates. Programming: Rates from 0.1 to 70 °C per min, maximum 650 min run time, three ramps with initial/final hold times. This refurbished HP 5971A comes with heater transition line, HP 5890 II GC with ECD, appropriate software, PC, all necessary HPIB cables, Edward vacuum pump.
