The HP 5965A is a stable, sensitive and cost-effective FTIR spectrometer specifically designed as a detector for gas chromatography. With its user-friendly design, the device enables the capillary GC/FTIR technique as a routine procedure in the chromatography laboratory. When paired with the HP 5890A Gas Chromatograph and HP Analysis Workstation, the system offers chromatographers the ability to utilize the powerful combination of GC/FTIR and GC/MS for the analysis of organic compounds. The GC/FTIR system produces wavelength chromatograms that enable near-unambiguous identifications of functional groups. Mass chromatograms based on a GC/MS system with HP's mass selective detector can be viewed side by side with GC/FTIR data, compared and printed as a unified report. FTIR and mass spectrum search results can be combined to maximize identification potential. The unit features a narrow-band mercury-cadmium-telluride detector that has extreme sensitivity – it can detect five nanograms of isobutyl methacrylate with a signal-to-noise ratio of 20:1. The specially designed, pseudo-black radiation source approaches the theoretical maximum in all wavelengths, but has very low power consumption. A short, straight and direct capillary interface to the GC allows peaks to pass directly into the flow cell with a simple, single connection to minimize dead volume. Optics and flow cell path are optimized for high IR transmittance. The entire GC/FTIR system is largely controlled via single button presses from the workstation. Data is displayed on screen during the run and integration and calculations with all standard GC methods as well as multiple internal standards, peak ratios and multi-point calibration curves can be used. Spectral and chromatographic data can be displayed together, and features such as change scale, window and zoom optimize interpretation and presentation. A quick library search accesses databases such as the EPA library of 3300 IR spectra, and user libraries are easily created and searched. There is a wide range of report formats. The combination of GC/FTIR allows the detection and identification of a wide range of compounds, including many that are difficult to determine by other means. In forensic science, designer drugs with subtle structural differences that are not easily distinguished by mass spectrometry can be clearly identified. Isomers of dangerous pollutants in environmental samples can, in turn, be clearly distinguished. The system's ability to identify trace components will be particularly relevant to the food, flavors and fragrances industries; while pharmaceutical, industrial and environmental chemists will particularly find the utility of GC/IRD for rapid qualitative screening of mixtures. Optional sequencing software, in combination with the HP 7673A Autosampler, enables automatic analysis of up to 100 samples without operator intervention.
