The LYOVAC GT 2 is a table-top freeze-dryer. The vacu­um pump can stand either an the floor or on the bot­tom shelf of the trolley. lt is connected to the basic unit by means of a vacuum line. This freeze-dryer is very versatile because of its modular design. Using the acrylic glass cylinders - 185 and 440 - it is possi­ble to operate following the one-chamber system for dry­ing with the manifold, or following the two-cham­ber principle for during both with the manifold and with trays.

The unit is evacuated by means of a two-stage vacuum pump Type TRIVAC D 4 B or D 8 B which has its gas ballast valve open during the evacuation process. As soon as the pump is switched off, the suction port valve fitted in the vacuum pump closes automatically and the pump is vented at the same time. The pressure in the chamber ri­ses either because of a leak in the system and/or because of the gas being released slowly by the product. (See opera­ting instructions of the vacuum pump).

The condenser coils are cooled by means of a one­ stage cooling compressor. The condensing surface is designed in such a way that the large amounts of water va­por which arise at the beginning of the process can be condensed. It is possible to dry certain products on trays directly between the coils of the condenser tube.

When the unit is switched off, the condenser coils are isolated from the vacuum pump by the suction port valve. After venting, the ice on the condenser coils warms up and slowly begins to melt. More rapid de­frosting can be attained by pouring water over the conden­ser coils. During the defrosting process, the basic compo­nents of the unit are put at the back of the basic unit.

The cooling unit, consisting of a one-stage, air-cooled coo­ling compressor, operates with refrigerant R 502 and is used to cool the condenser coils. When the FREE­ZING button is pressed, the compressor is swit­ched on after a time delay. If the DRYING button is pressed, the vacuum pump is also switched on.

Pressure measurements are carried out by means of a va­cuum gauge with a measuring range from ambient pressu­re to 10 -3 mbar. The gauge is integrated into the operating panel of the basic unit.
