The ArrayScan II System is the first automated High Content Sereening (HCS) platfonn designed for multicolor fluorescence-based screens in standard microplate formats using whole cells that are analyzed individually or on a population basis. The ArrayScan II System is based on wide field epifluorescence cell imaging using fluorescence-based reagents incorporated into and/or on the surface of cells. The system incorporates automated cell identification, focusing, measurement, and analysis capabilities for multiple cellular targets and processes occurring over space and time. Multiple fluorescence markers are detected by fully automated successive recording of each fluorophore with optimized optical filter sets to achieve efficient color separation. Incorporation of a pre-aligned Mercury-Xenon lamp with a 1500 hour lifetime bulb decreases instrument down-time and enables "around-the clock" functionality.

The system also includes application software that affords immediate and powerful screening capabilities, with the flexibility to customize assays easily and quickly. Each biological application comprises a collection of optimized algorithms that automate the extraction and quantification of assay-specific biological information from cell images collected on the ArrayScan II System.
