Compared to a manual hemocytometer, the Beckman ViCell automates a formerly laborious process with extremely high accuracy and reliability. The Vi-CELL allows users to load up to 10 samples simultaneously for easy and automated cell counting. A sample of cells is loaded into the system (minimum 600µL, but can be diluted and the dilution included in the final result), and the instrument aspirates the sample, mixes in the trypan blue, loads the sample into the chamber, and records: cell count/mL (equivalent to 100 "grids"), percent viability, and size distribution. It then runs a cleaning cycle and repeats the process for the next sample in the carousel. The processing time per sample is approximately 2.5 minutes, but there are several user-programmable features that can shorten or lengthen this time.
